Caravan of Thieves and Spuyten Duyvil are two bands rising rapidly through the vibrant Northeast music scene. On January 24th,
2014, they bring tightly crafted songs, stellar musicianship and
soaring vocal harmonies to the Jalopy Theatre in Brooklyn, NY.
With Caravan of Thieves,
driving gypsy jazz rhythms, acoustic guitars, upright bass and violin
lay the foundation for mesmerizing vocal harmonies and fantastic
stories. It’s theatrical and humorous. It’s musical and intense. It
entertains, dazzles and defies classification while welcoming the
spectator to join the band throughout the performance in momentary fits
of claps, snaps and sing-alongs. If Django Reinhardt, the cast of Stomp
and the Beatles all had a party at Tim Burton’s house, Caravan of
Thieves would be the band they hired.
Touring extensively, the band has shared stages with world renowned
artists such as Emmylou Harris, Dan Hicks, Nanci Griffith, The
Decemberists, Tom Tom Club, Iron and Wine, and many others. Their
infectious live show has also caught the attention of festival promoters
across the nation and the band has enjoyed appearances at Summer
Camp (Chillicothe, IL), Mountain Jam (Hunter, NY), Herndon
Festival (Herndon, VA),Musikfest (Bethlehem, PA), Four Corners Folk
Fest (Pagosa Springs, CO), Catskill Chill (Hancock, NY) and more.
"This zany group brings a touch of vaudeville, over-the-top
theatricality, performance art and an all-but-the-kitchen sink
collection of percussion utensils (and a hubcap) to their brand of gypsy
swing music… those wild and crazy guys (and gal) turned out to be the
most pleasant surprise of the day." --Huffington Post
With Spuyten Duyvil
(pronounced "SPITE-en DIE-vil"), every performance is a barn-burning
romp through the last 100 years of American Roots music. According to
Delarue of New York Music Daily, the band plays "an
exuberantly original take on classic Americana that draws on influences
from the 70s on forward, from outlaw country to newgrass to folk-pop...
They’ve got a sense of humor, sizzling instrumental chops and catchy
tunes." Their appearance at the Jalopy Theatre follows a rockin’ 2013
tour featuring stops at The Philadelphia Folk Festival, The Falcon Ridge
Folk Festival, Caramoor’s American Roots Music Festival, the Bethel
Woods Performing Arts Center, and release shows for their new CD”
Temptation” at NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall and the Ardmore Music Hall in
Philadelphia. The New York Times describes their music as “Raucous roots”.
Since it’s release in October, “Temptation” (http://www.spuytenduyvilmusic.com/p/music)
quickly reached the #2 song and #7 album spots on the International
Folk DJ Chart and broke in to the Top 20 of The Roots Music Report
Airplay Chart Top 30 of the Roots 66 Airplay Chart. Spuyten Duyvil’s
previous release, “New Amsterdam” (2011) received a “Top American Roots
Album 2011” nomination from The Alternate Root TV and placement on a
dozen radio DJ “Top Ten” lists.
Arguably THE prime folk joint in Brooklyn, The Jalopy Theatre
is combination theater, music school, guitar shop and bar. Situated
between Carroll Gardens and Red Hook this hidden gem makes the commute
worth it.
